How do you secure melamine shelves?

You can strengthen shelves with nosing. Melamine shelves will sag over time, especially if they’re more than a few feet long. Strengthen frames by gluing a solid wood nose to one or both edges of the shelf.
You can slot the nosing and the melamine shelves with a biscuit joiner to allow the use of wood biscuits. The biscuits add strength and help align the edging perfectly. No nails are needed; apply wood glue, insert the biscuits and clamp the edge to the shelf until the glue sets.

What to know about working with Melamine?

  • Choose your desired color. You’ll typically find melamine products in white; however, you’ll find 10 to 20 or more colors available, depending on the brand.
  • It would help if you had a special blade. The melamine finish chips easily when cut, especially if you’re using a day saw blade. But you can largely avoid chipping by investing in a special blade that’s designed to cut plastic materials.
  • Safety gear is a must. You should always wear safety gear when you’re using power tools. Be mindful that the plastic finish tends to chip off as it’s cut while working with Melamine. The chips are as sharp as glass, creating a natural hazard for your eyes. Safety glasses are needs, as well as a dust mask along with a pair of gloves.
  • Pin panels. The melamine finish is slippery, making it difficult to align the panels while drilling pilot holes for the screws. Solve this problem by first pinning the panels together using an 18 gauge brad nail gun.
  • Prevent splitting. The particleboard core is somewhat brittle and can break if you drive screws too close to the edge. Prevent this by positioning screws at least two in. from the edge of panels when possible. Drilling a pilot hole also helps prevent splitting.
  • Hide screw heads. To conceal screw heads, you can buy plastic caps that snap onto or over your screw heads.

Is plywood suitable for closet shelves?

For closets you want to stain, you want to use cabinet-grade plywood. These plywoods have a wood veneer on the outside to make your shelves look like wood. For closets you want to paint, MDF (medium-density fiberboard) is another excellent option. For shelves, plywood should be a minimum of 1/2″ thick.
